Volunteer as a Running Buddy!
Running buddy sign ups for the fall 2010 season will open in October 2010. If you are interested in applying please contact Chelsea Hodgson at chelsea@girlsrun.org or 206-528-2118.

Running Buddy Position Description
Share a girl's exhilaration and excitement as she crosses the finish line of her first 5k. For many girls, this is the biggest challenge - and biggest accomplishment - of Girls on the Run...and one of their favorite parts is having their very own Running Buddy by their side!

The goal of Girls on the Run is for the girls to do their best and HAVE FUN! Girls are not encouraged to race competitively, but are encouraged to reach their own goals. For most girls, that's making it to the finish-line- whether it is by walking, running or skipping!

Overview
A Running Buddy is matched one-on-one with a GOTR girl to accompany, encourage and serve as her mentor for two 5k events:
  • The first event is the Practice 5k and it takes place at the girl's program site during a practice.
  • The second event is the Girls on the Run 5k and it takes place at the end of the program (about three weeks after the Practice 5k).
Requirements
  • Must be 16 years or older by March 22, 2010.
  • All new Running Buddies are required to attend an on site, one-hour orientation and consent to a background check.
  • Attending both 5k events is required and extremely important because each Running Buddy is pre-matched with a specific girl based on walking/running pace. Having the same Running Buddy for both 5ks contributes to the girls' overall experience of mentorship and encouragement.
  • All Running Buddies are required to be registered for the Girls on the Run 5k and are responsible for registering themselves for the event and paying their own registration fee. There is no registration required for the Practice 5k.
Qualities of a Running Buddy
  • Fun loving
  • Enjoy spending time with youth
  • Patient and Supportive
  • Ability to run or power walk a 5k
How to be a Running Buddy
  1. Be available for both 5k events.
  2. Select a Practice 5k at a program site that fits your schedule and geographical location.
  3. Sign-up online.
  4. Attend an on-site, one hour orientation with the site's coaches.
  5. Register and pay the fee for the Girls on the Run 5k.
  6. Attend the Practice 5k. Meet your girl buddy and have fun!
  7. Attend the Girls on the Run 5k. Run, walk or skip with your girl buddy as she accomplishes her graduation 5k for the GOTR program!

Running Buddy Waitlist
Sometimes emergencies or last minute conflicts arise and registered Running Buddies are not able to attend the Practice 5k and/or the Girls on the Run 5k. In these cases we contact women who have signed up on the Running Buddy Waitlist to see if they can fill in.

Running Buddies on the waitlist DO NOT have to attend a training. Instead, they will go through a make-up training if they fill in for someone.

Who should sign up on the Running Buddy Waitlist?
  • Any women 16 years or older who wants to be a Running Buddy AND
  • Can only attend one of the 5ks OR
  • Can attend both 5ks but their preferred Practice 5k location is not available.
Sign-up online just like a regular Running Buddy!
