An amazing Girls on the Run coach and outstanding student, Katrina, is our standout Spirit Scholarship  recipient for 2013-2014!  Katrina coached for Girls on the Run for 10 weeks in the spring of 2013 and also this past spring.  Katrina’s co-coach says “the girls LOVED Katrina…she was always able to motivate them to run more than they thought they could.”

In addition to volunteering with us and empowering girls to make healthy decisions, Katrina is a 2014 honors graduate at Garfield High School, a cross country running competitor at the district and state level, Principal Cellist in her high school orchestra as well as the Seattle Chinese Orchestra, President and Founder of B.A.S.H. (a drug and alcohol-free event planning organization at Garfield). She finds time to not only volunteer for us but other mission-based organizations as well.

Katrina plans to attend Smith College in the fall, and take pre-med and sociology courses, with the intention of pursuing a medical career.  She will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Girls on the Run, thanks to generous funding from the Seattle Storm Foundation. The GOTR Spirit Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding high school student who has coached a minimum of two seasons for GOTRPS and who exemplifies the GOTR values of being joyful, optimistic, grateful and nurturing of one’s health.  Katrina says, “GOTR has taught me the importance of women’s empowerment, influencing my decision to attend an all-women’s college. I want to become an important and powerful woman.  In short, I want to change the world.”  We and the Seattle Storm believe that Katrina will change the world!  You go, Girl!

Thank you so much, Katrina, for all the time and energy you have given to GOTRPS.

If you or someone you know is a high school student, outstanding leader and role model and would like to volunteer as a coach for GOTRPS, please refer them to our website, www.girlsrun.org, to apply. Coach applications will be available July 21, 2014. And after two seasons, high school coaches are eligible for the GOTR Spirit Scholarship!
