Meeting Obstacles with Grace and Joy

by Coach “Bubbly” Brenda

Coaching at Thorndyke Elementary has been one of my favorite experiences this year. Like most Girls on the Run sites, our girls are amazing. They are joyful, enthusiastic, and eager to participate in the activities. I cannot believe tomorrow is our last full week of practice before our 5K on Saturday December 7, 2013. Our lead coach, Rockin Raphaela, along with Kooky Kim and myself, could not be more proud of our girls. The girls at Thorndyke have shown incredible discipline, focus, and maturity throughout the entire season, despite a few setbacks.

One of the biggest challenges our site experienced was not cold weather, rain or lack of a shared space, but actually losing a few team members. We had to say goodbye to a few girls earlier than we planned due to family moves outside the district. Despite the shift in size, our girls remained focused and encouraged each other at every practice. They even went so far to keep encouraging the girls and communicating with the girls that had to leave, making cards and reaching out. Dealing with change is never easy, especially at a young age, but our girls remained resilient and are more than ready to join their running buddies for the 5K.

Here’s to our girls at Thorndkye, who made us laugh till our bellies ached and gave us enough hugs to last a lifetime. Thanks for an amazing season.
